Ballet, Tap and Modern
We utilise the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing syllabus, this is the worlds leading dance examination board. Professional colleges incorporate the ISTD vocational major syllabus into their curriculum. We also enter students for the Royal Academy of Dance Higher Grade and Major Ballet Examinations. Since September 2006 we have included aspects of the British Theatre Dance Association syllabus, a new but equally accredited and exciting performance syllabus. This offers our students greater opportunity to excel in classes that suit their style and abilities. Dance examinations can be taken in ballet, tap and modern dance and the training structure is as follows;
Childrens graded examinations- Primary, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6.
Grades 7 and 8 are ballet only.
Vocational major examinations - Inter-Foundation, Intermediate, Advanced 1, Advanced 2.
The Grades are intended to be accessable to all students but at Grade 2 and above a greater level of commitment is necessary to achieve the required standard.
The Major examinations are provided for committed and serious students, physique and ability permitting. These students are often considering a career in dance as a performer or teacher.
All of our exam students attend at least two classes a week.

The dance training structure is as follows;
-
Pre-School - For information on our pre-school course click HERE.
-
Lower School (Juniors) - Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4- Ballet, Tap and Modern
-
Upper School (Seniors) - Grade 5 and Grade 6- Ballet, Tap and Modern / Grade 7 and Grade 8- Ballet
-
Vocational School - Intermediate, Advanced 1 and 2- Ballet, Tap and Modern
We support the structured syllabus by incorporating 'freework' into our classes. This comprises uniquely composed combinations of movements and steps for the students to learn each lesson. This ensures that each student aquires a thorough knowledge of dance vocabulary and is able to respond quickly and technically to new choreography. These are essential skills for a dancer. In addition, we provide opportunities for students to explore making their own dances, and arrange trips to see ballets and musicals, both of which assist in the development of artistic talent and aesthetic awareness.

Jazz
There isn't currently a leading professional body for teaching jazz in the UK. However, teachers always have the appropriate professional training and jazz performing experience to choreograph dances or create and direct performance pieces. After an extensive work out our class incorporates a variety of jazz styles. We have two jazz classes, and students at Grade 2 Modern and above may attend. Teachers will advise on the appropriate class for the student.

Musical Theatre
Musical theatre incorporates speech, acting, singing and movement. The emphasis is placed on creating performance pieces - whether they be exerpts from West-End or Broadway musicals, or new works. Aside from appearing in studio theatre performances at Counterpoint, and our annual show, students will work towards the British Theatre Dance Association performance awards or L.A.M.D.A exams.
Musical Theatre students are also take part in the 'Counterpoint Theatre Company' show, in addition to the annual show, performed at a chosen theatre.
Students are provided with a file for their current scripts and lyrics and are asked to bring this to each lesson - we would be grateful if parents can assist in reminding their children to bring these to class to prevent endless and unecessary photocpying. All Musical Theatre students must attend singing class.
There are three musical theatre classes and staff will discuss with students which is most suitable;

Singing Classes
Students build on their vocal skills, technique, and musical knowledge whilst learning a variety of songs and harmonies.
Our singing students have the opportunity to perform in our studio theatre and annual show. All MTC students must attend the group singing class. There are three singing classes at present.

Private Classes
Generally speaking we feel that most children benefit from learning within a group class environment. Private tuition might be recommended to some students prior to exams (particularly major exams), or for the older beginner to attain the technical standard necessary to join a class of their age group. Private classes are offered at the discretion of the teacher concerned.
